Glass Lenses: The Material Of Choice

When discussing optical clarity, glass lens material remains to be the choice of most. Other materials are available for all kinds of uses and prescription strengths. For some though, glass is the best choice for “optical clarity”.

Among the advantages to using glass lenses, glass is the clearest substance you can look through. It’s hardness and substantial feel is what makes it more scratch resistant than other materials. That is why most other materials compare their own features to glass. The scratch resistance of glass is unparalleled in the optical industry. It’s naturally scratch resistant.

Glass is also resistant to chemicals, and other abrasives. All of this makes it a popular choice for those working in the elements or for when toughness is desired.
Today’s glass lenses are more lightweight and durable. Which makes glass a great choice for optical lenses.

What You Need to Know About Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a very common eye issue that effects most people but only a few are actually severe enough to need corrective lenses or procedures to correct the problem. Astigmatism will show itself while in the process of an eye exam. In your eye, light enters passing through the cornea. The cornea bends the light, and in unison with the prescription lens, focuses it onto tastigmatism1he retina and the macular at the back of the eye. The retina sends the signals to the brain and forms the image of what you are actually looking at.

In an eye with no astigmatism the cornea is round and shaped like a basketball. In an eye with astigmatism the cornea is shaped oblong- more like a football. Because of the football shape the light is dispersed in many places and noastigmatismt directly to the retina and the macular causing blurred vision at many varying distances. It is usually caused by genetics or injury to the eye and nothing that a great pair of glasses can’t fix.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Most of us spend a portion if not all of our day gazing into the pixelated screen of our computer, cell phone, or tablet. The eye tends to want to focus on the composing pixels on the screen and with extensive use, can cause eye fatigue and headaches. Sometimes the level of discomfort increases with the level of use of digital devices as we tend to blink less when staring at a computer screen. The result of these headaches and eye stress is called  Computer Vision Syndrome or digital eye strain.

With the average person spending 7 hours a day on the computer, it is wise to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20-second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. As our lives grow ever more reliant on our digital devices we must protect our eyes and minds with proper rests while using our computerized gadgets.

Guide To Keeping Your Glasses Looking Perfect

eyeglassesWith all the thought, money, time and effort that goes into the making of your eyeglasses it is no wonder when we scratch or tarnish our lens, it can be frustrating to say the least. There are a few steps you can follow to keep your spectacles looking as good as the day you brought them home for years and years to come.

  • 1.)The best way to keep your lenses unscathed and your coatings working correctly is to wash them with simple soap and water. The American Optometric Association recommend this way of cleaning because the ingredients in the dish soap remove the dirt but do not dry the lenses out. Even some of the expensive lens cleaners out there do not compare to the gentle yet effective clean that you get from dish soap and water and a gentle, cotton cloth.
  • 2.)Try to avoid cleaning your glasses with dry materials. Items such as a napkin, shirt tail, wash cloth or paper towel may be handy at the time but can be very hard on an optical lenses. Dry materials can actually scrape any dirt or dust onto the surface of the lens resulting in scratches back and forth from where the cloth was rubbed.
  • 3.) Do not remove glasses with one hand. Removing your glasses from your face with two hands will always keep your glasses properly aligned and uphold the structural integrity of your frame.
  • 4.) Have different sets of glasses for different tasks. If you work in a harsh environment, play sports or engage in any activity where your glasses are at risk- then it is wise to invest in task specific frames and lenses. Safety, sport and flexible frames on the market are designed to endure more than what your standard ophthalmic frame could withstand. Also, lenses made from Polycarbonate or Trivex material are impact resistant and very strong.
  • 5.) When your glasses are not in use- keep them stored in a strong eyeglass case. It is so easy to want to throw your glasses into your purse, or leave them on your dashboard or not remove them when dealing with everyday chemicals such as hairspray or face products but it is a must to keep your glasses in top form. Taking the extra step to tuck them snuggly in their eyeglass case will ensure your glasses last.eyeglasses2

Following these guidelines when you are an eyeglass owner will ensure you get the most out of every pair for as long as possible.
